This week we will write cover letters and finish resumes! Remember, you are welcome to use any existing documents you have already, but you do have to make sure they are up to date and meet the requirements on the resume and cover letter checklists that are available in class!

This week we are diving in to our job seeking unit (though we've already had a number of assignments related to this). Resumes are the first task. Remember, you are welcome to bring any existing resumes you may have, but you must make sure that anything you submit meets the assignment requirements. This includes going through the peer editing process! I have uploaded a resume template below that you are welcome to use. There are lots of different styles available in any word-processing program (Word, Pages, Google Docs) that you might prefer. Remember, this resume is the first impression you will be making with a potential employer, so it's vital to make it a good one!
Permission forms have gone home for the Expo on November 6th, and should be returned as soon as possible!
We are officially into the second half of the course, believe it or not! Our first term wrapped up with the completion of the Finance Unit, including a Final Budget and Reflection. This week we learned a bit about how the brain works and how that connects to behaviour, particularly when it comes to habits (such as dopamine response to shopping and how that can be problematic when trying to manage your finances!). We are now shifting gears into Job Seeking and Workplace Skills, which will involve resume and cover letter writing, interview skills, conflict and relationship management, and a number of guest presentations and field trips. Important Dates: - November 6: Career, Volunteer, and Education Expo Field Trip (Yukon College) - November 13/14: Work Safety Sessions - November 13/14: Evening - Student Led Conferences - November 19: Human Rights Commission - December 2 and 4: PARTY Program Field Trip, full day (Dec 2 - Period 1, Dec 4 - Period 2) Any assignments that have not been completed to this point are still eligible for assessment. Curricular competencies are assessed throughout the semester, and in a variety of assignments so students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning and growth in their mastery of the content and competencies. (This doesn't mean students are expected to master "adulting" by the end of the semester! The focus is on developing skills and attitudes that will support them in work and life!) Here is the link to the documentary, "Surviving the Teenage Brain":
https://vimeopro.com/user13599767/docs/video/154086074 Today we had a visit from Employment Standards to discuss your rights and responsibilities as an employee. Pat's slideshow is posted here for your reference (lots of info!!) as well as the notes I wrote on the board to direct your assignment.
As discussed in class, interim reports will be sent out next week, which means that all work you would like to have considered for the reports must be in by Thursday, October 10th. This does not mean that you can't submit evidence of your work and learning after this, but it won't be part of this interim report. If you demonstrate improvement between now and the end of the semester, that will be what your report shows!
We have moved on in the Finance unit to discuss internet/cell phone plans, and will continue further into travel next week, but those will not be part of this report. Students were able to use their time today to move ahead to internet/cell phone plans OR to finish outstanding work. This was a busy week of learning about meal planning, how to manage the stress of "adulting". We also had a great visit from Yukon College, who explained the supports available for students, and what the College/University is like.
We also started watching a film about Minimalism as part of a conversation about building our lives to reflect what we really want, not just what we think we should have. Next week, we will be continuing with our Finance project by exploring topics such as personal care, how to decide about internet/cell phone/tv plans, and travel. This week we continued working on the Finance unit, up to and including Transportation (p.8).
We also had visits from Skills Canada and Apprenticeship Yukon, who gave us lots of information about opportunities available to Yukon students in terms of learning and travelling through skill-based events, as well as how to get paid while you learn by enrolling in an apprenticeship! This week was full of finances!
You should have completed up to page 6 in our unit booklet (we didn't do it in this order): p.1: Gross/Net Income (calculated this after the job search was complete) p.2: Estimated Budget p.3: Job Search (did this first) p.4: Wants/Needs p.5: Predictions (after our estimated budgets were calculated) p.6: Housing (this is where we wrapped up the week) We had some interruptions this weeks due to assemblies, fire drills, and the Terry Fox Run, so if you were away in addition to that, you might feel like you're far behind. I've been checking in with students on an individual basis to make sure everyone is up to date, and if you aren't, we can catch you up! Keep coming to class, try to be on time, and make good use of our time together! Next week we will continue on with the finance unit, and we have a guest presenter visiting us on Tuesday. Keep in mind, our guest presenters have been invited to share their expertise and knowledge as it directly relates to the curriculum of this course. Attending and participating shows that you are meeting these curricular competencies. If you miss presentations, you have to do a lot more work to demonstrate that you have learned what you need to. The last week of September is upon us! Time is flying! Come ask for help to get caught up if you are getting behind! I'm here to support your learning. :) |
