Community: Developing Empathy
Building a sense of community is vital to the health of any ensemble.
Connecting the ensemble to the broader community deepens the sense of purpose.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will use skills and attitudes appropriate to a range of music experiences in a variety of venues, as performer, participant, and audience, demonstrating:
- An awareness of the sense of community
- Audience and performer etiquette
- Performance skills
- Respect for others’ contributions
Learning Activities:
- Small group playing test “rehearsal” – students play a passage that will be tested for some peers. Students may video tape and elect to submit it for marking, but may do a live playing test after. (Audience students self-assess their own audience etiquette, performing student self-assesses their performance etiquette)
- Critique two concerts - one by another group and one school concert - using a checklist generated by the class
- Service learning - performance and volunteering in the community
