Before I tell you about this week's module, I have just learned of an exciting job opportunity for anyone interested in local events, journalism, or writing in general. What's Up Yukon is looking to hire youth freelance journalists (with the possibility of staying on after this summer). I have uploaded their info sheet for you to check out. If this is of interest to you, think about gearing your resume towards this job opportunity!
Speaking of resumes...
The next step in our course is for you to prepare a resume that you can use to apply for jobs. A resume is a snapshot of your skills and experiences that highlight why you are a good choice to hire. You will update your resume many times as you gain skills, certifications, and experience. You may even have different resumes for different types of job applications, but for now we'll start with one - for you as you are now.
If you already have a resume, that's great. Feel free to use it, but make sure it's up to date, and that you go over it with the assignment checklist below.
I strongly recommend that you use a resume template in Word, Pages, or Google Docs. You can pick any template you like, or you can use the Word template below that I've made which already has some information filled in for you. (That's the easiest option!)
Word: File -> New From Template -> Choose a template you like from the gallery
Google Docs: On the home screen of Google Docs, click the button 'Template gallery' in the top right and choose a resume template
Pages: File -> New -> Click on Resumes in the column on the left -> Choose a template you like
This is a bit tricky to do without the editing process we would have done in class, so please do proofread your work before submitting it, and expect some feedback! Since this is a professional snapshot - you are putting your best foot forward and want to get hired - it should represent you in the best light possible.
As always, please let me know if you need help or if I can clarify anything for you. I hope you are all doing well and are enjoying this gorgeous weather. I think my dog is getting a bit tired of me being around so much since I think I'm interrupting his napping schedule, but we all have to make adjustments under these circumstances!
Talk to you soon, and keep those assignments coming, including your skill development logs. I'm absolutely loving the different things you're learning!
